COPA RELEASES VIDEO & OTHER MATERIALS FROM OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 2100 S. ST LOUIS

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) released, to its website, video, and other materials of an officer-involved shooting near 2100 South St. Louis that took place on February 13, 2023. Pursuant to a court order entered on April 13, 2023, in the case of People v. Javontay Kindred, COPA was prohibited from releasing materials relative to this incident. Due to the completion of the criminal case, the court order is no longer in effect, allowing for materials to be released.

Based on preliminary information, the incident began when officers conducted a street stop near 2100 South St. Louis. Two officers were on routine patrol when they observed a doubled park vehicle, with a group of individuals surrounding the vehicle. One of the officers exited their vehicle and approached one of the individuals, who they suspected of concealing a weapon. The individual fled, followed by one of the officers, through a park and southbound down an alley. The second officer exited the vehicle in pursuit of the individual, southbound on St. Louis. As the individual approached, one officer retrieved his weapon from his holster and fired once, striking the individual in the chest. A weapon was recovered on scene. COPA’s investigation will conclude in the coming months, in keeping with our commitment to transparency and timeliness.

COPA has released to its website for the officer-involved shooting: body-worn camera (BWC), third-party video, OEMC Transmissions, Case Incident and Tactical Response, which can be viewed by visiting: https://www.chicagocopa.org/case/2023-0000632/
