COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS WEEK OF 9.30.24
COPA had a great time engaging the residents of Chicago in the community during the week of 9.30.24. Our office is committed to helping residents understand how to file a complaint or compliment an officer and explain to the public our role in police oversight. Below is a brief description of our most recent community engagement efforts. The Austin Experience Fall Brunch – September 30, 2024
COPA had a great time attending the Austin Experience Fall Brunch organized by the My Chi My Future anchor organization Project Exploration. The brunch attendees were able to hear from several speakers including Alderwoman Emma Mitts, Chief of CPS Network 3 provided updates, and several community organizations provided information on programming. COPA was able to give out information about our role in police accountability.
Visit to Roosevelt University – Police and Society Class – October 2, 2024
COPA was invited to speak to the Police and Society Class at Roosevelt University. COPA Chief Administrator Andrea Kersten spoke to the students about the history of police oversight, our agency, COPA’s jurisdiction, and our investigative process. The students also held a question & answer portion to learn more about careers in civilian oversight.
Bronzeville Parent University Open House – October 2, 2024
COPA had a great time attending the Bronzeville Parent University Open House at Walter H Dyett High School for the Arts. Parents and the community were able to learn about the programming offered through Parent University and connect with local community organizations. COPA was giving our information on how to file complaints and compliments towards CPD.
Westside Ministers’ Coalition Monthly Meeting – October 3, 2024
COPA was in Austin on October 3, 2024, at the monthly Westside Ministers Coalition community meeting. One of the primary purposes of the meeting is to tackle various social issues & discuss ways attendees can bring about a positive change throughout the city. This meeting included information about domestic violence and mental health.
Network 8 High School Fair – October 3, 2024
COPA had a great time attending the Network 8 High School Fair at Gage Park High School. Families were exploring various potential schools and community resources from local organizations. COPA was giving our information on our role in police accountability.
Fiesta Mexicana – October 4, 2024
COPA had an amazing time attending Fiesta Mexicana organized by SGA Youth & Family Services in the Brighton Park community. The fiesta offered food, live music, haircuts, community organizations providing resources, and several cultural activities for families. COPA was giving our information on how to file a complaints & compliments towards CPD.
A Chicago Style Thank You – Block Party for the DNC Neighborhood – October 5, 2024
COPA had a fun time attending a Chicago Style Thank you, a Block Party for the DNC Neighborhood organized by the Mayor’s Office. The party was a thank to the local community for being good partners during the DNC in August. The party included children’s activities, food, a DJ, community organizations providing resources, and various city agencies providing information. COPA was giving our information on our role in police accountability.
