COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS WEEK OF 7.24.23

COPA had a great time engaging the residents of Chicago in the community during the week of 7.24.23. Our office is committed to helping residents understand how to file a complaint or compliment an officer and explain to the public our role in police oversight. Below is a brief description of our most recent community engagement efforts. CPS Back to School Bash at Dyett High School – 7.24.23

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is hosting several Back-to-School Bashes for students and families to celebrate and prepare for the start of the 2023-24 school year. COPA participated in the CPS bash to celebrate the new school year and explain to families the role our agency plays in police accountability.

CPS Back to School Bash at Nixon Elementary– 7.25.23

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is hosting several Back-to-School Bashes for students and families to celebrate and prepare for the start of the 2023-24 school year. COPA participated in the CPS bash to celebrate the new school year and explain to families the role our agency plays in police accountability.

CPD Know Your Rights Roundtable Discussion at South Chicago Community Center – 7.25.23

COPA joined the Chicago Police Department and community members for a roundtable discussion where the public learned about their rights when interacting with law enforcement. This and future roundtable discussions will provide the public with transparent information that can lead to meaningful, collaborative, and positive outcomes.

Youth Budget Engagement Roundtable Discussion – 7.25.23

The Office of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chicago’s Office of Budget and Management organized a series of Budget Engagement Forums across the City to listen to residents about their priorities and ideas for Chicago’s next budget. On Tuesday, July 25th COPA attended the 2024 Chicago Youth Budget Roundtable, which was held for young people ages 13-24. At this event held at Harold Washington Library youth were able to participate in a city resource fair, listen to a budget presentation, and take part in small group discussions.

City Clerk Mobile City Hall Community Resource Fair at Ellis Park – 7.26.23

COPA joined Anna Valencia City Clerk Office along with various other city departments and sister agencies to connect with the community. At this mobile outreach event, COPA had a resource table and shared with the public the agency’s role in police accountability.

Northwest Community Alliance Monthly Meeting – 7.27.23

COPA met virtually with various not-for-profit organizations to discuss community resources that can be offered to Hispanic communities in Chicago.

Community Commission for Public Safety & Accountability (CCPSA) Monthly Meeting – 7.27.23

COPA attended this Community Commission for Public Safety & Accountability (CCPSA) monthly meeting where various policing and policy issues that concerns Chicago was discussed.

COPA’s Clean and Green in South Shore – 7.28.23

COPA has made an agency commitment to offer various community service projects for our staff. One of those efforts includes connecting with the city’s Department of Streets and Sanitation’s Clean & Green program is to help clean and beautify various neighborhood lots and parks in the city. Staff from COPA on Friday, July 28th cleaned a lot in the South Shore neighborhood.
