COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 700 S. COLUMBUS

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 700 S. Columbus. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On July 12, 2026, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when on-duty CPD officers were notified of vehicles drag racing and an open fire hydrant near Grant Park. Several officers responded to the scene and attempted to deploy deflation devices and spike strips. Multiple vehicles drove around the officers and deflation devices, including a black sedan which drove in the direction of one of the officers, resulting in the officer discharging their weapon toward the vehicle. No one inside the vehicle was struck, and the driver and passengers of the vehicle were later placed into custody. One officer was taken to the hospital in good condition. No other injuries were reported, and no one was struck by gunfire.

COPA can confirm body-worn camera and POD footage captured the initial interaction and subsequent officer-involved shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
