COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS WEEK OF 8.26.24
COPA had a great time engaging the residents of Chicago in the community during the week of 8.26.24. Our office is committed to helping residents understand how to file a complaint or compliment an officer and explain to the public our role in police oversight. Below is a brief description of our most recent community engagement efforts. Community Commission for Public Safety & Accountability (CCPSA) Special Hearing on Pretextual Traffic Stops – August 27, 2024
COPA attended the special hearing on pretextual traffic stops of the Community Commission for Public Safety & Accountability (CCPSA). This hearing was scheduled after the Free2Move Coalition submitted over 2400 signatures to the CCPSA. This hearing included a panel of speakers from academia, leading experts, and practitioners who have studied reforms to these types of policies across the nation.
Bingo with Seniors – August 28, 2024
COPA had an amazing time at the bingo with seniors at the DFSS Southwest Regional Senior Center in the Chicago Lawn community. COPA is happy to partner with the DFSS Southwest Regional Senior Center and call the bingo for this vigorous group of seniors. COPA was able to set up a resource table and give out information about our role in police accountability.
Northwest Community Alliance Meeting – August 29, 2024
COPA had a great time attending the Northwest Community Alliance Monthly Meeting hosted by Family Focus, this meeting was hosted by CICS West Belden. Our agency was able to meet with various not-for-profit organizations to discuss community resources that can be offered to Latino communities on the Northwest side of Chicago. During the meeting COPA also shared with meeting attendees the role that we play in police oversight.
Take Back the Block – Mayor’s Office – August 30, 2024
COPA’s participated with Mayor Brandon Johnson and several other City of Chicago departments & agencies in his Take Back the Block event in the Humboldt Park community. The event included several speakers that were faith leaders and Alderman Jessie Fuentes that gave a call to action to end violence in the community. The city departments & agencies onsite supported resident requests and connected them to services. COPA was giving out information about our role in police accountability and how to file compliments & complaints towards CPD.
Back to School Health Fair – August 31, 2024
COPA had a great time at the La Casa Norte & Senator Javier Loera Cervantes Back to School Health Fair at the Brighton Park Community Campus. The fair included food, household supplies, haircuts, children’s activities, school supply giveaways, and several community organizations that were giving our information on available resources. COPA was able to set up a resource table with information on how to file compliments & complaints towards CPD as well as our overall role in police oversight.
Black & Brown Unity Prayer Walk – August 31, 2024
COPA had a great time at the Black & Brown Unity Prayer Walk in the Humboldt Park community. The prayer walk was a call for unity to end gun violence and address quality of life concerns on the west side of Chicago. COPA was able to set up a resource table with information on how to file compliments & complaints towards CPD as well as our overall role in police oversight.
