COPA PROVIDES UPDATE ON OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 1900 N. AUSTIN AVE

Today, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is providing an update regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred near 1900 N. Austin Avenue. COPA investigators immediately responded to the scene and began the investigation.

On May 10, 2025, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) notified COPA of an officer-involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates this incident began when CPD officers responded to a call of a large gathering of people. Upon arrival, the officers dispersed the large group, and one individual fled the scene. Two officers pursued the individual, who fell to the ground and dropped a gun. Despite officers giving verbal commands, the individual appeared to reach for the gun. One of the officers discharged their weapon, striking the individual. The individual was transported to the hospital in fair condition. An officer was taken to a hospital for observation. A gun was recovered on scene.

COPA can confirm body-worn cameras captures the initial interaction and subsequent shooting. Materials related to this incident will be posted to our website in accordance with the City’s Video Release Policy within 60 days of the incident unless prohibited by court order.
