COPA INVESTIGATES FATAL OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING NEAR 49TH & LAVERGNE

Early this morning the Civilian Office of Police Accountability received notification from the Chicago Police Department (CPD) of an officer involved fatal shooting in the 8th Police District near 4899 S. Lavergne Avenue (Vittum Park).

Early information has determined officers were responding to a man stabbed near 49th & Lacrosse. After attending to the injured civilian, who was taken to the hospital, officers searched for the suspect who was located near 49th & Lavergne. While attempting to apprehend the suspect, who was armed with a knife, a struggle ensued and officers tased the subject. The suspect continued to attack officers with the knife resulting in two officers discharging their firearms striking the suspect who is now deceased. Officers were equipped with body worn cameras.

COPA investigators responded to the scene and are actively investigating the actions of the officers to determine if the use of deadly force is in accordance with Department policy.

COPA will continue to canvass the area for witnesses, additional third party video, and other evidence.

In accordance with the city’s video release policy, COPA will release all relevant body worn camera and third party video, OEMC 911 calls, reports and other material evidence at the earliest point possible without compromise of the administrative investigation and no later than 60 days from the incident.
