COPA CONCLUDES INVESTIGATIONS INTO TWO SEPARATE INCIDENTS INVOLVING OFFICER PIERRE TYLER

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has delivered its Final Summary Report (FSR) and investigative materials, as required by ordinance, to the Chicago Police Department, regarding two separate investigations into Chicago Police Officer Pierre Tyler.

COPA concluded two separate investigations for a domestic violence incident and a use of force incident that took place on March 11, 2021, and December 8, 2021, respectively.

On March 11, 2021, COPA was notified of an incident involving an individual who made a domestic violence complaint against Officer Pierre Tyler. The individual alleged that there was a verbal altercation that turned physical with Mr. Tyler. The individual was later treated at a hospital and released with injuries.

COPA was also notified of an incident that took place on or around December 8, 2021, in the 2100 block of North Nashville. Investigators responded to the scene, where an individual was found deceased in their home. Officer Pierre Tyler, who had a previous relationship with the decedent, was subsequently arrested and charged with murder for his involvement in this incident.

COPA’s ordinance requires the Superintendent to respond within 60 days, though the Superintendent may request to extend the review period for up to 30 additional days, for a total review period not to exceed 90 days.

The Superintendent’s response to any COPA recommendations of discipline or other remedial action, if applicable, will determine the extent of the additional review processes that follow. These review processes may include, but are not limited to, review by the City of Chicago Department of Law, hearing before the Chicago Police Board, grievance filings, and arbitration.

COPA will post its Final Summary Report (FSR), which will include COPA’s analysis of the evidence and investigative findings and recommendations, on its website upon the conclusion of the Superintendent’s review or, if applicable, following service of disciplinary charges by the Department of Law on any involved officer.
