    The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) plans to visit DFSS Community Service Center on Wednesday, September 18th to make it easier for residents to file a complaint or compliment a member of the Chicago Police Department.     COPA joins Anna Valencia City Clerk Office along with various city departments, sister agencies, aldermanic offices and community organizations for the launch of the new Mobile City Hall. Mobile City Hall will be hosted regionally at various convenient locations throughout Chicago to allow residents access to several city and community services. Residents will also have an opportunity to ask questions and gain a better understanding of the services of City Hall. COPA will share with residents the agency outreach efforts and the role we play in police accountability. Staff will also be available to receive complaints and compliments on members of the Chicago Police Department.

    COPA will attend City Hall Resource Fairs. The purpose of the community engagement fairs is to provide residents with an opportunity to interact with various City agencies, provide feedback, and learn more about resources and supports provided through your department.

  • Public Meetings of the Police Board

    Chicago Public Safety Headquarters 3510 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL, United States

    The Police Board holds a regular public meeting once a month. Members of the public are invited to attend and are welcome to address questions or comments to the Board. The Superintendent of Police (or his designee) and the Chief Administrator of the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (or her designee) will be at the meetings. Prior sign-up is required of those wishing to address the Board.

    The meetings are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and take place at the Chicago Public Safety Headquarters.

    COPA will be visiting TASC Chatham parole office to participate in a meeting and join a dialogue on how to help returning citizens overcome barriers to re-entry, building capacity through networking with local and state community constituents and leaders, and communicate with other fellow TASC partnering agencies.

    Lindblom Math & Science Academy High School 6130 S. Wolcott Ave., Chicago, IL

    COPA will attend City Hall Resource Fairs. The purpose of the community engagement fairs is to provide residents with an opportunity to interact with various City agencies, provide feedback, and learn more about resources and supports provided through your department.

  • Junior Achievement of Chicago Career Day at Aspira Antonio Pantoja High School

    Aspira Antonia Pantoja High School 3121 N. Pulaski Road, Chicago, IL

    Junior Achievement of Chicago host several Career Days throughout the year to help high school students make informed, intelligent decisions about their future, and foster skills that will be highly useful in the business world. Staff from COPA will participate in this upcoming Career Day to help students understand the role of COPA, the importance of police oversight, discuss ways youth can improve positive interactions with law enforcement and explain career paths.

  • 21st Ward, Alderman Brookins Community Town Hall Meeting

    Join Alderman Howard Brookins Jr. at the 21st Ward Town Hall Meeting and hear what’s new in the ward. Also, learn about what’s coming to Chicago, and get some of those questions answered. While learning how you can help with building a better 21st ward community. This is open to the public.

    COPA will be present at the Block Club 2019 Convention being held at Simeon High School. Guest speakers include Mayor Lightfoot, Operation PUSH Jonathan Jackson, St. Sabina Father Pfleger, along with several other city and community organizations. COPA staff will be available to explain to the public the role we play in police reform.

  • Leader’s Network

    The Leader’s Network is a gathering of church and community members working together to organize, strategize, and mobilize to improve the quality of life for West side residents and greater Chicago. We believe all people are valuable and for this reason we are committed to social justice and disaster relief both locally and globally, continuing the path of those who have gone before us. COPA will attend to discuss with attendees the role we are playing in police accountability.

  • 15th District Domestic Violence Subcommittee Community Meeting

    COPA plans to share its mission, vision, outreach efforts and explain its commitment to investigating allegations of domestic violence and sexual misconduct and supporting survivors.

  • Fall Citizen’s Police Academy

    COPA will be one of the speakers at the fall session of the Chicago Police Department’s (CPD) Citizen’s Police Academy to discuss the agency’s mission and the role we play in police reform. The Citizen’s Police Academy is a department-wide strategy designed to educate the community on police operations, build community trust, and improve engagement efforts through department-led training and discussion.

  • COPA Police Academy Presentation

    COPA was one of the speakers for the summer session of the Chicago Police Department’s (CPD) New Recruits Police Academy to discuss the agency’s mission and the role we play in police reform. The New Recruits Police Academy is a department-wide strategy designed to educate the community on police operations, build community trust, and improve engagement efforts through department-led training and discussion.

  • Imagining Philadelphia Police Oversight Townhall

    COPA’s Chief Roberts will be participating in the Imagining Philadelphia Police Oversight Townhall, a panel hosted by POWER, which is an interfaith organization committed to building communities of opportunity that represents over 50 congregations throughout Southeastern and Central Pennsylvania. Chief Roberts was asked to speak specifically about how Philadelphia can implement oversight based on how COPA has implemented oversight in Chicago.

  • Hyde Park Kenwood Community Conference Community Dialogue on Police Accountability

    COPA’s Chief Roberts will be speaking on a panel for Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference for its Community Dialogue series focusing on police accountability. Other speakers included in this event are Bocar Ba of the Invisible Institute, Inspector General Joseph Ferguson and local grassroots organizations.

  • COPA CONVERSATION WITH 46TH WARD ALDERMAN JAMES CAPPELMAN

    Chief Sydney Roberts and COPA leadership will join 46th Ward Alderman James Cappelman to participate in a virtual town hall conversation about the work of COPA and the state of police accountability in Chicago. This event will take place on Tuesday, July 21st at 6PM.

  • Street Leader Social Justice Panel

    COPA participated in a Street Leader Social Justice Panel with 50 youth hosted by UrbanPromise where panelists discussed the impact of youth in social justice.

  • City Council Committee on Public Safety Meeting

    COPA participated in a hearing hosted by the Committee on Public Safety discussing a city ordinance that would require semi-annual hearings before the committee regarding the Consent Decree. 

  • State Of Chicago Youth Town Hall

    COPA will join Mikva Challenge and A Better Chicago to participate in the State of Chicago Youth virtual town hall taking place August 19th from 11:30AM-1PM. This event will focus on five major issue areas: health, education, juvenile justice, housing, and safety/policing.

  • 49th Ward Alderwoman Maria Hadden Town Hall

    COPA will speak at the 49th Ward Virtual Town Hall where Public Information Officer, Ephraim Eaddy will discuss the importance of police accountability. Attendees will also learn about COPA’s investigative process, outcomes from its investigations and how the public can help report police misconduct.

  • City Council Committee on Public Safety Meeting

    The City Council Committee on Public Safety is holding a meeting on August 24th. The committee has jurisdiction over all matters relating to the Police Department, the Fire Department, the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, and matters affecting emergency city services generally (other than operation of emergency medical facilities), except those matters affecting collective bargaining agreements, employee benefits and pensions.

  • 39th Ward Ald. Samantha Nugent Virtual Community Meeting

    COPA will speak at the 39th Ward Virtual Community Meeting hosted by Alderwoman Samantha Nugent. During this virtual event, COPA will explain its agency investigative process, discuss the importance of police accountability, and share with constituents in this ward how they can report police misconduct. Additional speakers for this event includes representatives from the 39th ward office and Deborah Witzburg, Deputy Inspector General for Public Safety.
